15 Cool Facts About Dogs

Image by Jeff Chabot from Pixabay

We all love dogs. They have become such a part of our culture and our family that they sleep with us, eat with us, hang out with us. They are our tried and true companions, our best friends, and our confidants. They give us unconditional love, only wanting to please us and get love in return.

How much do you know about dogs? I bet there will be one or two things in this list you didn’t know. I’ve worked with dogs my entire adult life, and there’s some I didn’t know either.

So on to the list:

  1. A dog’s nose print is as unique as your fingerprint. No two nose prints are alike.

2. Speaking of noses, a dog’s sense of smell is 10,000 times stronger than ours. Can you imagine being able to smell something bad 10,000 times more. Yuck! Dogs don’t seem to mind though.

3. How about a dog’s ears? They can hear 4 times the distance. That’s probably why I can never sneak a bag of chips without them knowing.

4. Your dog circles around and around, then curls up in a ball to sleep. Do you know why? They do it not only to stay warm but as an innate instinct to protect their vital organs.

5. And speaking of sleeping, puppies sleep 18-20 hours a day while growing. “Mom, I’m gonna go take a nap” Zonk! Wake up 18 hours later.

6. While we’re on the subject of puppies, they have 28 teeth. Adults have 42.

7. A dog’s sleep is much like ours and that is why they dream.

8. Dog’s can sense time: Probably why my dog Ginger bugs me every day at 5 pm. It’s dinner time!

The bigger one is the aforementioned time senser.

9. Dogs only sweat through the pads of their feet.

10. While we are contemplating that, has your dog’s paws ever smelled like Fritos? It’s because a combination of microorganisms and sweat give off a nutty aroma. I will never think of Fritos in the same way again!

11. Dogs do not only see in black and white. They can also see color, mostly blue and yellow.

12. Dogs can recognize more than 150 words. When mine are outside, and I yell “Hungry Hippos,” they come running!

13. Do you know all the reasons dogs bark? They are being protective, sounding the alarm, bored, greeting you, or they want attention. Or maybe they just like to hear themselves talk. We all know that one in the group.

14. When you pet a dog, not only does your blood pressure goes down, but so does the dog’s.

15. And lastly, both humans and dogs excrete the hormone oxytocin(the love hormone) It’s been studied that long-term friendship between humans and dogs might be due to oxytocin positive interactions between them.

Did you learn at least one thing you didn’t know about dogs? Dogs are special creatures, and life would be lonely and boring without them. And life for them would be lonely and boring without us.

If you are looking for a dog, check out your local shelter. There are so many lost and lonely pups waiting for their furever home! All of my dogs (4) were rescues and they are the best kind!

How to Crochet a Flower Bandana

This is my sweet Abby!

We all love our dogs. And who doesn’t like their dog to look good. I know I love to keep my Shih Tzu/Pug mix Abby groomed and looking sweet. She usually gets a bandana from the groomer, but I like to make my own, too. In this post, I’ll show you how to crochet a dog bandana with a flower on it.

I used Caron Simply Soft in Mango and Sunshine. I thought those were beautiful, bright, spring colors. A cotton yarn would work up nice as well. Color combo possibilities are endless. Have fun and use your imagination. I used a G (4mm) hook. You will also need a snap for closure.

First, using a tape measure, measure around your dog’s neck in inches.

With your main color, Ch the number of stitches needed to measure 1” less then neck size. Remember, yarn stretches. Make it an odd number so you will end up with an even number of stitches. I used half double crochet for this bandana. Another great stitch to use for this is the herringbone hdc. (YO, insert in st, YO, pull through, do not YO but pull through 1st loop on hook, then YO, pull through remaining loops on hook)

Row 1: hdc in 2nd ch from hook, and in each ch across.(even number of sts) Fasten off.

Hold up to dog’s chest and use stitch markers to mark a stitch on each side the width of the chest. Rejoin the yarn where 1st st marker is and continue with row 2.

Row 2: hdc in each st to the 2nd stitch marker, turn

Row 3: Ch 1,hdc first 2 sts together, hdc across to last 2 sts, hdc last 2 sts together, turn

You will repeat row 3 until you are down to 1 stitch. Fasten off. Weave in any ends.

Three Border options:

Border 1: This is the border in the picture. Join your contrasting color in 1st ch of row 1 (Ch 3, skip next st, sl st next st) around bandana working in chs, sts, and ends of rows. Join with sl st to 1st st. Fasten off.

Border 2: This makes a small shell like border. Join in 1st ch of row 1 (3hdc in next st, skip next st, sl st in next st) around working in chs, sts, and ends of rows. Join with sl st in 1st st. Fasten off.

Border 3: This is a simple border. Join in 1st st, Ch 1, sc evenly around working in chs, sts, and ends of rows with 3 sc in the point of bandana. Join with sl st in 1st st. Fasten off.

Flower Motif:

With yellow, Ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook or use magic circle (6) Fasten off. Join white with sl st in 1st st. (Ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next 2 chs, hdc in last ch, sl st in next st) Repeat around until you have 6 petals. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew flower to middle of bandana. This flower may be too big to use on a bandana for really small dog.

Sew the snap ends to each end of the 1st row. If you don’t have a snap, a 1/2 inch button can be used and buttoned through one of the stitches on the other end.

All that’s left is to fasten it around your dog’s neck. Doesn’t she look beautiful?

Brickwork Stitch Tutorial

A stitch tutorial for the Brickwork Stitch.

The brickwork stitch is a lovely textured stitch. It uses treble crochets and front loops to create a raised alternating brick pattern. I’ve used a 3 color sequence to allow you to see where the front loop stitches are and therefore making it easier for you to learn the stitch. It would look pretty in a 2 color repeat or if you are more interested in the texture, a single color would work as well.

It would make an adorable baby blanket using pastel baby colors. Use a chunky yarn, and you could create place mats or hot pads.

With this stitch, after the first 2 rows are made, you will crochet on the right side only. Keep this in mind when deciding on a project, as it is not reversible. For instance, only one side of a blanket would have the texture. For a place mat or hot pad, it would not matter as you only use one side. There is also a lot of weaving of ends. You may want to weave as you go. Use a hook size compatible with your yarn size. For this demonstration, I used a 4 mm (G) hook. The Lilac Yarn is Red Heart Soft and the Cream and Green(Limelight) Yarn are Caron Simply Soft.

Abbreviations Used:

ch= chain, sc=single crochet, hdc=half double crochet, FL=front loops, BL=back loops, tr=treble, rep=repeat, st=stitch

Multiple is 6 sts + 3, plus 1 for foundation chain.

Step 1: Work the number of foundation chains you need for your project in Yarn A.(Lilac) Sc in 3rd ch from hook, and in each ch across, turn.

Step 2: Ch 1 (counts as sc), skip first sc, sc in FL only of each sc across, changing to yarn B (Cream) in the yarn over of final sc, turn. Fasten off yarn A. (Lilac)

Step 3: In yarn B(Cream), ch 2 (counts as hdc), skip 1st st, work hdc (in both loops) of every sc across. Fasten off Yarn B, but do not turn work. From here you will not be turning, but joining the yarn back at the beginning of each row.

Treble Crochet ( Yarn over twice, pull through 2 loops, yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over pull through final 2 loops.) See illustration below.

Step 4: If using 3 colors, join Yarn C (Green). If using 2 or just one color, join Yarn A(Lilac) to beginning of previous row, ch 1 (counts as sc), 1 tr in FL only of next 2 sc from 2 rows below, sc in BL only of next 3 hdc, *tr in FL only of next 3 sc 2 rows below, sc in BL only of next 3 hdc: rep from * to last 3 sts, tr in FL only of next 2 sc from 2 rows below, sc in last sc. Fasten off, but do not turn.

Step 5: Repeat step 3. If using 3 colors, join Yarn A(Lilac). If using 2 colors, join yarn B(Cream).

Picture is showing 5 rows of the Brickwork Stitch completed.
5 rows completed

Step 6: If using 3 colors, join Yarn B(Cream), if using 2 colors, join Yarn A(Lilac) to beginning of previous row, Ch 1 (counts as sc) sc in BL only of next 2 hdc, *tr in FL only of next 3 sc 2 rows below, sc in BL only of next 3 hdc; rep from * to end. Fasten off but do not turn.

Step 7: Repeat step 3. If using 3 colors, join Yarn C (green), if using 2 colors, join Yarn B(Cream)

Step 8: Repeat Steps 4-7 for whatever length the project is.

I hope you enjoyed learning this brickwork stitch and are able to use it in your next project. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Subscribe if you would like to be informed when new content is added. Until next time, have a happy day and Happy Crocheting!

Crochet Edgings

Crochet Edgings to finish your projects.

You just finished your blanket, your scarf, your piece of clothing. But is it really finished. What is it missing? Yes, an edging. Most crochet items need a crochet edging to be truly finished. There are so many edgings to choose from. Some are fairly simple while others are quite complex. I’ve compiled a small list of fun and easy ones. Maybe you are a beginner, maybe you are intermediate. Whichever you are, I hope you will find these edgings simple and fun.

Abbreviations Used: sc=single crochet, dc=double crochet, st=stitch, ch=chain, hdc=half double crochet, tr=treble crochet, rep=repeat, tch=turning chain, yo=yarn over

Simple Shell Edge

If using this on say a blanket, I would single crochet all the way around the blanket. This would make a foundation row. This edge works best in multiples of 4 sts + 1.

Row 1: (right side) join with a slip st in your edge, ch 1, sc in same stitch as join, *skip next st, 5 dc into next st, skip next st, sc in next st; rep from * to end. Fasten off.

Gentle Wave

This edging works best with multiples of 14 sts + 1. This edging would look nice on a baby blanket. You could also make a foundation row sc before beginning the wave.

Row 1: (right side) join with sl st in your edge, ch 1, sc in same stitch as join, *over next 14 sts, sc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next 2 sts, ch 1, (tr, ch 1) in next 3 sts, dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 2 sts; rep from * to end. Fasten off.

Bobble Dainty

This edging works best in multiples of 5 sts + 1.

Special stitch: popcorn st=work 4 dc in next st, drop loop from hook, insert hook into the first dc you made, pick up dropped loop and draw through the dc, ch 1 to secure popcorn.

Row 1: (right side) I would use a foundation row of single crochets, turn.

Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as a hdc, ch 2) skip 1st 2 sc, sc into next st, *Ch 5, skip 4 sc, sc into next st; rep from * to last 2 sc, ch 2, hdc in last sc, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in 1st hdc, ch 3, popcorn into next sc, ch 3, *sc into next ch 5 arch, ch 3, popcorn into next sc, ch 3; rep from * to last sp, sc into 2nd ch of tch. Fasten off.

Pintuck Edge

This edging works with multiple of any number of sts. It makes a sort of raised edge, I think would look wonderful on a pillow.

Row 1: (right side) Use Yarn A to sc all around edge, turn.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as a dc) skip st at base of ch, dc into front loop of each sc to end, turn. Fasten off Yarn A, join Yarn B.

Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as a dc) skip st at base of ch, dc into back loop of each dc to end, turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, *insert hook through next dc and corresponding back loop from the st on 2nd row, yo, draw loop through the layers, yo, complete as a sc; rep from * to end. Fasten off.

Honeycomb Edge

This edging works best in multiple of 5 sts + 1. I think this edge would look cool on the end of a scarf.

Row 1: (right side) This would be a foundation of sc, turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc into each of 1st 2 sts, *Ch 5, skip 2 sc, sc into each of next 3 sc; rep from * to end, omitting 1 sc at end of last rep, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc into 1st sc, *5 sc into next Ch 5-arch, skip next sc, sc in next sc; rep from * to end, turn.

Row 4: Ch 6 (counts as 1 tr, ch 2), skip 1st 2 sc, sc into each of next 3 sc, *Ch 5, skip 3 sc, sc into each of next 3 sc; rep from * to last 2 sc, ch 2, 1 tr into last sc, turn.

Row 5: Ch 1, sc into 1st tr, 2 sc into ch 2-sp, skip next sc, sc into next sc, *skip next sc, 5 sc into next ch 5-arch, skip next sc, sc into next sc; rep from * to last ch 2-sp, 2 sc into last sp, sc nto 4th ch of tch. Fasten off.

I hope you enjoyed learning these 5 fun and easy edgings. I hope you can incorporate one of them into one of your future crochet projects. Until next time, Happy Crocheting!

My Start on Etsy

I started crocheting at the age of 11 and crocheted pretty regularly for most of my life. As with any hobby or things we enjoy doing, life has a habit of getting in the way. You get busy living that, and sometimes the things you enjoy doing get put on the back burner. Crocheting took a hiatus in my life.

At the dog daycare where I work, we do a secret Santa exchange every year. A couple of years ago, I decided to make my present. The person I drew had chihuahuas. I decided to crochet a chihuahua and searched the internet for a pattern. I found one called Lucky the Chihuahua by Doris Yu on Ravelry.

It was so very cute. On the scarf, I embroidered Hua (Hoo-ah) because that is what we call them at work. After it was opened, everyone loved it, and I heard a lot of “You should sell your stuff on Etsy.” I had heard of Etsy but didn’t really know anything about it. I did some research on it, liked what I saw and thought why not give it a try.

I crocheted a few things from pattern books I had from my mother. I listed them and waited. Nothing happened. I had heard writing and selling patterns was a popular way to go on Etsy. I had always followed everyone else’s patterns and thought, “I don’t think I could I actually make one myself.” I remembered what my mother once told me. “You never know what you can accomplish unless you try.” The first pattern I made and wrote was a turtle pillow for my son.

My first pattern

It wasn’t an “Oh my god, that is the most awesome thing ever”, but it was my first attempt, and I was proud of it. My son loved it and that mattered more.

My 2nd pattern was a Hooded Tiger Blanket. My son modeled it for me to take the picture, and he enjoyed doing that. I listed it in my shop. Then one day, I had set my phone down and walked into another room.

Next thing I knew, I heard “Cha-ching” and I was, “Oh my god, I think I just had my first sale on Etsy.” I had no idea it was going to make that sound. I ran to my phone, and sure enough someone bought my Tiger Blanket pattern. I’ve heard the Cha-ching sound many times since. I will never get tired of hearing it, and I get just as excited as that first time.

My first sale on Etsy

My most popular item in my shop to date is the Hua Headwarmer aka a chihuahua hat. Also inspired by a co-worker who sent me a video of a chihuahua wearing a knitted hat. She said, “With your rad skills, you think you can crochet this?” Boom! The very next day I brought her a hat, and we put it on her dog, Banana.

And since then, I have added several different styles of Hua Headwarmers including Hua-Corn hat, Ribbed design, Puff Stitch design, and Double Pom Pom. I have recently started a line of wildlife edition Hua Headwarmers. Giraffe and Shark are my first two. I am and will be selling the patterns for these hats as well as made to order hats for some of them. I also have patterns not related to dogs.

If you’ve made it this far, thank you for reading about how I got my start. I hope you will enjoy the content and free patterns I will be providing. Have a happy day and as always Happy Crocheting! If you would like a promo code of 25% off anything in my Etsy shop, click here: Promo Code
