Why should your pup wear a crochet dog hat

Small dogs with short hair, like Chihuahuas, Toy Fox Terriers, and Mini Greyhounds have less protection from the cold. Having less insulation in the form of body fat or thick fur, leaves them more exposed to the elements. Clothing, such as a crochet hat, provides an extra layer of warmth and insulation, keeping their sensitive ears and head protected from the cold.

Not only that, they look darn cute!

Yarn needed to make a hat for your pup

You’ll want a yarn that is not only warm to keep your pup’s head warm, but also soft, especially for those with sensitive skin. I not only design patterns for anyone to crochet their own, I also make and sell these handmade hats. I use Caron Simply Soft which is a lightweight #4 yarn. As it’s name implies, it’s super soft and comes in an array of colors. I also use Red Heart Soft. My clients love the feel and look of the finished product. You will find my original Hua Headwarmer (currently only sold as a finished product) in my Etsy Shop.

Sizing

I originally came up with the Hua Headwarmer (pronounced Hoo-ah) for a Chihuahua at a dog daycare I worked at. The sizing is based on poundage, the amount of stitches, and size of the crochet hook. These sizes will fit similar sized small dogs. You could very easily adjust based on the number of stitches you start with.

XXS (3-4 lbs.) Head Circumference 6-7”

XS (5-6 lbs.) Head Circumference 7-8”

S (7-9 lbs.) Head Circumference 9-10”

M (10-12 lbs.)Head Circumference 11-12”

Drawstring: (Optional)

Ch. 80-100 based on how long you want the drawstring. Leave a tail long enough on each end of chain to put on a needle. Use the needle and weave the drawstring in and out of the double crochets on the trim of the hat. Make sure the ends of the chains are double knotted, then cut off or weave in ends of yarn. You can then pull the drawstring tighter around the face and tie under chin.

Pom Pom:

Use a pom pom maker or wrap yarn around a 3-4 in. piece of cardboard. The number of times depends on how big you want the pom. I usually wrap between 150-175 times. Gently pull wraps off the cardboard. Tie in middle. Snip loops. Trim. Sew to top of hat. You can also use a faux fur pom pom. I like the ones that come with snaps, which makes it removable for washing the hat.

Care Instructions

I always recommend hand washing for my dog hats, but they can be machine washed and dried on the gentle cycle. If you are using a removable faux fur pom pom, remove before washing.
