Why should your pup wear a crochet dog hat

Small dogs with short hair, like Chihuahuas, Toy Fox Terriers, and Mini Greyhounds have less protection from the cold. Having less insulation in the form of body fat or thick fur, leaves them more exposed to the elements. Clothing, such as a crochet hat, provides an extra layer of warmth and insulation, keeping their sensitive ears and head protected from the cold.

Not only that, they look darn cute!

Yarn needed to make a hat for your pup

You’ll want a yarn that is not only warm to keep your pup’s head warm, but also soft, especially for those with sensitive skin. I not only design patterns for anyone to crochet their own, I also make and sell these handmade hats. I use Caron Simply Soft which is a lightweight #4 yarn. As it’s name implies, it’s super soft and comes in an array of colors. I also use Red Heart Soft. My clients love the feel and look of the finished product. You will find my original Hua Headwarmer (currently only sold as a finished product) in my Etsy Shop.

Sizing

I originally came up with the Hua Headwarmer (pronounced Hoo-ah) for a Chihuahua at a dog daycare I worked at. The sizing is based on poundage, the amount of stitches, and size of the crochet hook. These sizes will fit similar sized small dogs. You could very easily adjust based on the number of stitches you start with.

XXS (3-4 lbs.) Head Circumference 6-7”

XS (5-6 lbs.) Head Circumference 7-8”

S (7-9 lbs.) Head Circumference 9-10”

M (10-12 lbs.)Head Circumference 11-12”

FINISHED HAT SECTION WITH TRIM-This is not a photo of a hat with the puff stitch.

Plush dog wearing a cream colored crochet dog hat.

Drawstring: (Optional)

Ch. 80-100 based on how long you want the drawstring. Leave a tail long enough on each end of chain to put on a needle. Use the needle and weave the drawstring in and out of the double crochets on the trim of the hat. Make sure the ends of the chains are double knotted, then cut off or weave in ends of yarn. You can then pull the drawstring tighter around the face and tie under chin.

Pom Pom:

Use a pom pom maker or wrap yarn around a 3-4 in. piece of cardboard. The number of times depends on how big you want the pom. I usually wrap between 150-175 times. Gently pull wraps off the cardboard. Tie in middle. Snip loops. Trim. Sew to top of hat. You can also use a faux fur pom pom. I like the ones that come with snaps, which makes it removable for washing the hat.

Faux Fur Pom Pom

Care Instructions

I always recommend hand washing for my dog hats, but they can be machine washed and dried on the gentle cycle. If you are using a removable faux fur pom pom, remove before washing.

Do you like to make your own crochet dog toy or make some to donate to your local animal shelter? The Sleepy Moon Dog Toy is perfect for these endeavors. It’s big and cuddly and ideal for the larger dog that likes to carry their toys around. For the smaller dogs, it could easily be used as a pillow or for company when their human has to be away.

Polyfil Stuffing

  • Your circle may start to get wavy as you increase. Once you fold in half and stuff, the wave will go away.

Hooded Tiger Blanket Crochet Pattern

This hooded tiger blanket holds a special place in my heart. While I tend to stick to dog-related designs, I’ve decided to share it to coincide with Give Something Away Day, on July 15th, 2021. Read on to find out why this blanket is dear to me, and how you can get a free download of the pattern.

“Giving benefits us all… The giver also benefits. Giving not only makes us feel good but it teaches gratitude, too. Whether we give financially or by offering our skills and services, we lift others up.”

How the Hooded Tiger Blanket Came About

A few years ago, I was scrolling through Facebook and saw a pattern for a child size Hooded Unicorn Blanket by BriAbby. You can find that pattern HERE.

My granddaughter absolutely adores unicorns, and I loved unicorns before they were cool. So, of course, the thought that popped into this grandma’s head, “This is the perfect Christmas gift for her.” I bought the pattern, got the yarn in all the pretty pinks and purples she loves, and made this beautiful unicorn blanket. Needless to say, she absolutely loved it.

A friend of the family, who played on a softball team with Tigers in their name, asked, “Can you make an adult sized, tiger one?” And my brain went, “Hmmmm.” And the Hooded Tiger Blanket was born. Oh, and that family friend adored the blanket.

Another reason the blanket is special

My son, Jesse, modeled the blanket for me in all the photos. He is autistic and socially distanced as most with this condition are. He keeps to himself and stays out of the limelight. Quiet frogs and turtles are more his scene, not loud, roaring tigers.

Can you say thrilled? That was me when he agreed to be my model. He had fun and was quite amused(as you can see from the smirk on his face) as I repositioned the blanket several times trying to get it just right for the photo. A cherished memory was made that day for both of us.

A young man sitting on a black leather couch wearing a crochet Hooded Tiger Blanket.

How this Hooded Tiger Blanket gave something to me

“Cha-ching” What a wonderful, musical sound. The Etsy App sound. If you are a handmade seller, you know what I’m talking about. The Hooded Tiger Blanket was my very first sale on Etsy in not one, but two shops. What are the odds of that?

Give Something Away Day
