What is Amigurumi?

Amigurumi is the Japanese art of crocheting or knitting small, stuffed yarn creatures, typically animals, dolls, or other cute characters. These soft, often whimsical creations are made by working in the round and using simple stitches like single crochet, with increases and decreases to shape the body. Amigurumi projects are usually made with tight stitches and stuffed with fiberfill to give them their characteristic plush, three-dimensional form. Loved for their charm and creativity, amigurumi is a popular craft among crocheters of all skill levels.

Allow Yourself to Grieve

First and foremost, is giving yourself the time to grieve your pet. Grief is a natural response to loss, and it looks different for everyone. Some people feel sadness immediately, while others may feel numb or disbelief. It’s okay to cry, reminisce, or even feel moments of guilt. It’s even okay if you find you can’t cry. Have patience with yourself and recognize that healing takes time.

Coping with the Loss of a Beloved Pet: Finding Comfort in the Memories

Instead of focusing solely on your loss, take time to celebrate the happiness your pet brought into your life. Look through old pictures, recall funny moments, or share stories with your family. “Remember that time <pet’s name> did this.”

Talk About Your Feelings When Dealing With Pet Loss

How to deal with pet loss is different for everyone. Always know, you don’t have to go through this alone. Reach out to family members, friends, or even online pet loss support groups who understand what you’re going through. Sharing stories and emotions can help lighten the weight of grief. Being able to share with other people who are going through the same thing can put you on the path to healing. They may some ideas or ways they’ve used that never crossed your mind.

Create a Memorial

Honoring your pet in a meaningful way can provide comfort and a sense of closure. Consider:

  • Creating a scrapbook or photo album filled with your favorite memories.
  • Planting a tree or flowers in their memory.
  • Keeping their collar, tag, or a favorite toy in a special place.
  • Writing a letter to your pet, expressing your love and gratitude for the joy they brought to your life.
  • Donate to or volunteer at an animal shelter

Finding Comfort in Organization and Reflection

When grieving, it can help to put your emotions and memories into something tangible. I know firsthand the difficulty dealing with pet loss. At one point, I had 3 senior dogs gracing my home at the same time. And one by one, in a 9 month period, I lost each one. It did help a little that I had one baby left to cling to.

That’s why I created the Pet Memorial Journal—a space to honor your pet’s life, document favorite memories, and gently guide you through the grieving process. This planner includes:

  • Journaling pages to reflect on special moments
  • A memory section for photos and favorite stories
  • A place to write a goodbye letter and express your love
  • Planning pages for memorial ideas and keepsakes
  • Weekly Check Ins to use as long as you need

If you’re looking for a way to remember your beloved pet and process your grief in a meaningful way, this planner may be just what you need. You can find it HERE.

How to Deal with Pet Loss-Give Yourself Time

Healing doesn’t run in a straight and strict line, and there is no “right” time to move on. Some people feel ready to adopt another pet quickly, while others may need months or years before they’re ready. Listen to your heart and know that whenever you choose to welcome another animal into your home, it’s not replacing your pet, it’s simply making space for more love. Sometimes, rescuing a pet can be the key to healing, as you may be giving love to that animal they’ve never experienced before.

Remember, They Will Always Be with You

Even though they are no longer physically by your side, your pet’s love and presence will always remain in your heart. Their paw prints are forever imprinted on you and in your life, and the bond you shared will never fade. Losing a pet is incredibly difficult, but in time, the pain softens, leaving behind the warm memories of the joy and love they brought into your life.
